He spent 30 years as a Colonial Service administrator in eastern Africa, K.C.M.G., C.B., F.L.S., F.Z.S., M.B.O.U. He first went to East Africa on a hunting expedition in 1884 and later joined the service of the imperial British East Africa Company. In 1894 he was appointed by the Foreign Office as a First Class Assistant in Uganda. He served as Lieutenant-Governor in East Africa (now Kenya) and as Governor of Uganda. As a great sportsman and explorer, he devoted all his spare time to studying natural history and was founder and President of the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society.
