After about a month in the hospital, she was moved to a rehabilitation facility. While there, she miscarried her baby, whose gestational age was estimated to be 8 to 12 weeks. During a follow-up medical procedure required by the miscarriage, Rhoda developed cardiac arrhythmia and died on February 1, 1983.

Her husband was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to 8 years in prison. He was about 8½ years older than Rhoda, and she was his second wife. In 2005, he murdered his fifth wife in Texas, for which he was executed on January 15, 2020. He physically abused and threatened to kill all of his wives.
