Jeremiah "Jerry" was a farmer before and after the Civil War, in addition to owning a store with Pete Rountree [of Emanuel County]. To answer the Confederate call to arms, Jerry enlisted in Company B, 2nd Battalion, GA Cavalry on September 18, 1862 at Camp Rose, Georgia. When he returned to Emanuel Co. after the Civil War, he, as did most of his friends, started from scratch. The store had been lost, he and Pete owed a bundle to Charleston, South Carolina merchants, his horse died, and he owed $700, a sizeable sum at that time. He and Pete Rountree worked out a settlement with the merchants for their debts. Jerry bought a pony from John Overstreet, made ten bales of cotton, and used the proceeds to pay on a farm. The home place was later called, "The Sycamores". (From: The COLEMANAC 1750–1976, page 179, by Arthur Clinton Coleman).

Jeremiah donated the land for the Coleman Cemetery, located just down the road from the original location of "The Sycamores" on what is now GA State Hwy. 192 in Summit (Twin City).
