Baseball Broadcaster. Born in Los Angeles, California, for twenty-seven years he was a radio and television sportscaster, known as the "Voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates" (1948-75). Nicknamed "The Gunner", he began his career on a sports show on KDKA-TV Pittsburgh, when he landed in the broadcast booth as a commentator for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Also through his whole coarse as an announcer in Pittsburgh, he broadcasted football games for the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State College games. After his time with the Pirates, he did some broadcast duties for the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, Houston Astros and ABC Monday Night Baseball. He died of cancer at age 68 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In 1986, he posthumously received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame and was selected for the Pride of the Pirates Award in 1999.
