On July 26, 1969, he married Dorothy Marie "Dottie" Bagley in Hays County, Texas.
After several years of marriage, Edwin sustained severe injuries when he was thrown from his horse. He remained in a coma for a long time. He was finally allowed to come home with the assistance of a nurse. His nurse had taken him for an outing to get chicken and while eating, he choked and tragically died. He was only 26 years of age. He was preceded in death by his father Edwin C. Wills, Jr. Survivors were his wife, Dottie, mother Stella Wills Hageman and brother Ancrew S. Wills.
Edwin's body was donated to science.
