Grand Duke of Russia, grandson of Nicholas I. During World War I he was the commander in chief of the Russian Army in the first year of the war. Later Czar Nicholas II took this role, sending Nikolas, who was his uncle, to the Caucasus front.
In 2015 he was reinterred in Moscow at the Bratsky Military Cemetery in Sokoly.
