Barbara Nichols Mashburn, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on Friday, October 3, 2008 at Murphy Medical Center; surrounded by those who loved her and those she loved. She had shared 53 wonderful years with her husband Cecil W. Mashburn.

Barbara was born on May 27, 1934, to the late Ervin and Etta Nichols. She was a graduate of Andrews High School. Barbara loved to travel with Cecil and they spent a few months a year in Arcadia, FL. She loved to be with her friends and family; to meet people; tell stories and show pictures of her grandchildren that she was so proud of. She enjoyed playing the games at Harrah's Casino. With her strong will power and desire to live, Barb had fought the pain and suffering of Raynaud's Disease and Schleroderma for years; then God decided to call her home. She will be remembered by all as a gentle, kind lady, with a petite body and a big heart.

Surviving are her husband, Cecil; a daughter, Valerie Mashburn; a son and daughter-in- law, Jeff and Marsha Mashburn all of Andrews; seven grandchildren, who will truly miss their "Nana", Andrew and Arron Mashburn, Steven and Thomas Hall, and Tyler Edwards all of Andrews, Kirsten Davis of Statesville, NC, and Megan Puccio of Alabama; a great grandchild, Braeden Davis; a brother, Bobby Nichols of Houston, TX; and two sisters, Jeanie Foster of Mt. Vernon, MI and Edith Jones of Stanley, NC.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Grace Johnson, Shirley McClure, and Alvin, Burton and Kenneth Nichols.

She leaves behind a brother-in-law, Larry Rayburn; a special sister-in-law, Phyllis Rayburn; and a very special neighbor, Elaine Russell, who cared for her daily during her final weeks of declining health.

A memorial service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the Andrews United Methodist Church with Revs. Scott Roper and Paul Hacklander officiating.

The family received friends from 12:30-1:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Andrews United Methodist Church prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Barbara Nichols Mashburn to the Valleytown Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1210, Andrews, NC 28901.

Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews in charge of arrangements.
