Wounded at Antietam 9/17/62.
Mr.Smith suffered a horrific wound, he was shot through face and cut off his lower jaw.
Dr H.A. Grant surgeon general of the state of Connecticut and Enfield resident saved Mr. Smith life and through his expert surgical techniques reattach what was left and gave some function back to his jaw.
Mr. Smith died from typhoid fever 2 1/2 years later at the age of 23.
