He was born in Quitman, Van Buren Co., Arkansas. He married Ellen Pearson 2 November 1865. Ellen was born in 1843 and died in 1906. They were the parents of seven children: Mary, Fannie, Claudia, Bessie, Anna, Lisbie and Nellie. Their dau. Nellie is buried next to her parents.
After Ellen's death, John married Cynthia Elizabeth (Duncan) Shelby October 14, 1909 in Cleburne County. She was b. in 1872 and died May 3 1911. She is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery located just outside of Quitman, Arkansas.
They had one son, Franklin Shelby b. May 3, 1911. Franklin married Carrie Dancer on Feb. 18, 1932 in Faulkner County, Arkansas. Franklin died in California on May 27, 1977
