Melvin graduated from Gresham, Nebraska High School with The Class of 1945. He was a veteran of the Korean War. On April 5, 1953, he married Doris Giebelman in Hampton, Nebraska. Melvin retired from farming near Gresham, Nebraska

Melvin was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, York and Gresham American Legion Post 13.

Melvin survivors are wife, Doris Tonniges; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Susan Tonniges of Utica, Nebraska; Brian and Dana Tonniges of Cairo, Nebraska; Douglas and Denise Tonniges of Gresham, Nebraska and Brad and Ann Tonniges, Columbus, Nebraska; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Sjuts of York, Nebraska and a host of relatives and friends.

Melvin was welcomed into The Heavenly Home by his parents, William and Esther (Suhr) Tonniges; brother and wife, LeRoy and Janis Tonniges, and sister and husband, Mildred and Melvin Naber.
