Kathryn grew up in southern Ohio near Ironton where her father worked in coal mines. She told stories of early years walks in the beautiful Ohio country side going up and down hills that border the Ohio River. After her father died the family moved to Marion and found work.

She volunteered in food service to traveling soldiers in World War I where she met the future husband Asa who was enroute by train across country. They corresponded and he returned later to marry her. They lived in Marion and raised a family there.
