"Dr. Benjamin M. Cromwell was born Sept. 22, 1835 in New Orleans La., son of Warham and Josephine Cromwell. Educated at the University of Va., studied at University of Medicine at New York city. Graduated with honors in 1857. He served as a surgeon with rank of major under Gen. Jackson and Gen. Lee of the Confederate Army. He was present at the surrender at Appomatox. In 1866 he married Louisa C. Burwell. They had 6 children. He became resident physician at Eckart Mines, president of Allegany Medical Assoc., author of several medical subjects. He always made his professional visits on horseback which he claimed gave him his robust health. He worked until a few months of his death at age 81 on April 30 1917. Buried in this plot is his wife*, and his sister Sarah Cromwell."
