Ernest was born in Neosho, Wisconsin, 9th child to his mother Bertha (Froemming) Ullmann and 15th child to his father Albert Ullmann. He moved to Montana in 1909 after hearing about it from his brother Robert who has also moved there. He homesteaded near Fairview. He married Katie Reick, September 9th 1913 at Sydney. He farmed until 1958 when he retired and moved to Sydney. His wife Katie died April 11, 1961. He married Agda Ross, June 1st 1964.

He was survived by his wife, and four daughters, Audry, Dorothy, Eunice, and Cecelia.
