James R. Thompson, 65, Minneapolis, formerly of Bismarck, died July 26, 1997, in a Minneapolis hospital. Services will be held at noon Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. David O. Walters officiating. Burial will be in Ahola Cemetery, Wing.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m.-noon Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home.

James was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Cokato, Minn., the son of Lee and Sylvia (Kennila) Thompson. He was raised and educated in Wing rural schools. James farmed on the family farm for a few years before entering the U.S. Army in 1955, where he was a heavy equipment instructor. In 1958, he was honorably discharged. He returned to Wing and worked on the family farm. In the late 1960s he moved to Bismarck. In 1994, he entered the Veterans Nursing Home in Minneapolis, where he resided until his death.

He is survived by one daughter, Valerie Thompson, Las Vegas; one sister, Anna Mae Folmer, Wing; one brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Lenora, Wing; five nephews; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece.
