She was the daughter of Bennett Easterling & Mary Ann E. (Hicks)Easterling. The Easterling family came to Texas when Fernetta was thirteen years old. Her father died of malaria 15 Mar 1874 on the family farm near Athens, Henderson Co., TX. She married W. D. Newland 20 Jan 1876 in Bell Co., TX. They had seven children: Alice, Charles, Joe, Mary Ann, Florence, Bennett & Clarence.
