Maxine was born in Lancaster Co, S.C., the daughter of the late Beulah Flynn Lingle and Van A. Lingle Sr. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie J. Horton, Sr., brothers, Archie F. Lingle and Van A. Lingle Jr., and two sisters, Sybil L. Whitlock and Edith Lingle. Mrs. Horton graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1934.

Mrs. Horton was a retired elementary and preschool teacher. She was also director at Raggedy Ann and Andy Daycare in Charlotte, NC. She taught in Lancaster and Kershaw, SC school systems, and in Charlotte at St. Luke's Lutheran, St. Gabriel's Catholic and the Head Start program. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and a former member of Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC where she taught Sunday School for preschoolers. Mrs. Horton was a member of the Garden Club and several Bridge clubs.

Surviving are her daughters, Vangie Horton Poe and Leslie Horton Jr. Poe and wife, Rebecca, of Cary; and three grandchildren, Eric Poe, Emily Poe and Jeff Horton.
