Joseph R. "Joe" Dawson, born near Berryville, was a son of Robert (B.) Dawson and his first wife, Jane Watkins Dawson. He had eight full-siblings and six half-siblings from his father's second marriage to Nancy McMurray Dawson.

Joseph R. "Joe" Dawson married Florence Jackson in May 1885. They had six children.

Joseph R. "Joe" Dawson was the county Sheriff, a successful farmer and stockman.

Florence Jackson Dawson states:
"In May 1885, I married Joe Dawson, a Cherokee cowboy."

"He died at our home last winter, December 8, 1936."

".... he did not even know when he was born, although he said last year before he died that he was eighty-four."

Jessie Dawson Jackson states:
Joseph R. Dawson was born in 1851 and died in 1939. Married in 1886.
** Gravestone shows 1850 and 1836.

Obituary posted in the Miami News-Record from Miami Oklahoma on December 8, 1936 states:
"Joseph R. Dawson, 86 years old, a resident of Afton for more than half a century, died at his home there last night."
**Suggests he died on December 7, 1936.

Vann, Emory" by Jessie Dawson Blackwell:
"Joseph R. "Joe" Dawson "came to Afton, Okla. from Texas after the Civil War."
