James enlisted Aug. 12,1861 in the 14th Reg't South Carolina Infantry. He stayed about a year and was transferred to the 2nd Artillery Reg't South Carolina where He worked in the blacksmith shop shoeing horses , repairing wagons and sometimes driving them. He was captured at Cheraw, South Carolina on March 4, 1865 and carried to New Bern, North Carolina then to City Point, Va. Then onto Point Lookout Maryland Prison Camp where he stayed until the war was over. He then swore an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
