Jamie was born on January 9, 1931, in Berrien County, Georgia, the only child of Price and Nettie Yarbrough Hansford. As a young girl she moved to Jacksonville where she graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1947 and began working for Atlantic National Bank. She married Jack Donald Austin of Jacksonville on March 5, 1949. After taking several years off to raise a family, she returned to work at Atlantic Bank and held a variety of positions, eventually becoming the company's first woman branch manager.
