Melissa was a daughter of Fletcher L. Rutledge and Anna (Deck) Rutledge. She was first married to John Williams in 1856 in Vernon Co., Missouri. They had a daughter, Anna Elizabeth Williams, born in 1860 in Kansas. In the same year, Melissa and her daughter, who later married James Benjamin Paul, were living with Fletcher and Anna in Vernon Co., Missouri. Whereabouts of John, living or dead, is not known.

Melissa's second marriage was in 1868 in Linn Co., Kansas, to Benjamin Day Husted. They had children: Gilbert Charles Husted, Truman Gilbert Husted, James Robert Husted, Clara Husted, and Mary E. Husted.

Melissa's death was untimely at age 43. Much loved and much missed, she left her children in their father's care in 1884. The headstone above her grave proclaimed her family's love. Some years later, the stone was broken away from its base leaving just the upper part to mark her resting place.
