Wife of Thomas Hayes Campbell. Daughter of Alexander Robertson and Maria Hemphill.

Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, August 26, 1937

Mrs. Hannah J. Campbell, for many years a resident of Chariton, died at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. D. M. Cornell, in Lacona, Iowa, on Monday, Aug. 23, 1937, at 12:30 a.m. at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 14 days. She had been in failing health for some time.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Paul H. Hicks, of the Chariton Methodist church, were held at the Beardsley Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and burial was in the Chariton cemetery.

Hannah Jane Robertson, eldest daughter of Alexander and Maria Hemphill Robertson, was born in Ross county, Ohio, April 9, 1847. When a small child she came with her parents to Iowa, locating near Mediapolis in Des Moines county. There she grew to womanhood and prepared herself for a teacher in the rural schools at that place.

After a few terms of teaching, she was married at Burlington, Iowa, on October 17, 1866, to Thomas Hayes Campbell, son of William S. and Maria Campbell, of near Kossuth. They came to Chariton in 1870, locating on a farm, now the home of Ward Carpenter, in Benton township. Her home has been in and near Chariton since that time. Her busband preceded her in death June 27, 1902, since which time she has made her home with her children.

She was the mother of nine children, three of whom preceded her in death. They were Mrs. Nellie Long, Miss Leila Campbell and Win S. Campbell.

Surviving her are two daughters and four sons, Mrs. Maude Bonnett, Robert J. Campbell and Thomas B. Campbell, all of Chariton and vicinity; Bert R. Campbell, Laguna Beach, Calif.; Will S. Campbell, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Gladys Cornell, of Lacona, with whom she made her home.

She also leaves fifteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Palmer, and two nephews, of Elma, Wash., and two nieces, Mrs. Lena Gray Blair, of Lincoln, Nebr., and Miss Helen Gray, of Long Beach, Calif.

Coming of old pioneer stock, she knew many hardships, but her faith in God and her unfailing courage and ingenuity, carried her over many rough paths. She had been in failing health for several years and suffered a fall which had made her bedfast the past year.
