FORMER SPEAKER OF INDIANA HOUSE DEAD
Henry C. Pettit, Long United States Marshal, Expires at Home in Wabash.

Wabash, Ind., July 26 -- Henry Corbin Pettit, former member of the Legislature, Speaker of the Indiana House and later United States Marshal, died at his home here shortly before 7 o'clock this evening. His death followed an illness of many months and his condition had been critical for six weeks. Since Friday morning Mr. Pettit was unconscious practically all the time, only at long intervals recognizing relatives about his bedside.

Mr. Pettit was one of the best-known members of the bar in northern Indiana, where he had practiced law for many years. He was a son of Judge and Mrs. John Upford Pettit, and was born in Wabash Jan. 6, 1863. He received his early education in his home town, having been graduated from the local high school, after which he attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

TWO TERMS IN HOUSE
Immediately after leaving the Naval service he began the study of law and on March 20, 1886 was admitted to the practice here. Until his death Mr. Pettit continued in general practice in State and Federal courts, with his office in this city. On Oct. 3, 1888, Mr. Pettit married Miss Eva Stitt of this city, who, with one daughter, survive.

In May 1887 Mr. Pettit was elected a member of the Wabash City Council and a year later was elected mayor, serving two years. He was elected representative in the State Legislature in November 1894, for two years and was re-elected in 1896. During his second term he served as Speaker of the House.

On March 23, 1901, Mr. Pettit was appointed United States Marshal for the District of Indiana by President McKinley and in December 1901, was reappointed by President Roosevelt. Mr. Pettit was associated with the late Judges H.B. Shively, C.E. Cowgill, Thomas L. Stitt and F. O. Switzer of this city while engaged in the practice of law. In 1897 Mr. Pettit, then the senior member of the firm of Pettit & Stitt, retired and became legal adviser for the firm of A.M. Atkinson & Son, with whom he was identified for some time.

Mr. Pettit was succeeded as United States Marshal May 18, 1911 by Edward H. Schmidt of Indianapolis.
