William J. "Bill" Arens, age 80, of Kellogg, died Thursday evening, October 29, 2009, at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home in Wabasha.

He was born August 3, 1929 in Kellogg, the son of Matthew and Bess (O'Dell) Arens. He served in the U.S. Army, serving in Panama. Following the service, he returned to Kellogg. He worked as a field representative for Minneapolis Moline in Hopkins for a few years. He then managed the Kellogg Liquor Store and later managed the Kellogg Legion Hall for 19 years. During this time he also worked as a beekeeper. He later worked at Federal Mogul in Lake City, retiring in 1995. Bill married Janice Wischow February 12, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minneiska.

Bill was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg and a member of the Plainview Knights of Columbus. He was also a 60-year member of the Kellogg American Legion Post #546. He enjoyed woodworking and "playing the bones." He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, Kellogg; children, Ron (Kathy), Minneiska, Sharon (Sheldon), Edina, MN, Keith (Teresa), Kellogg, Jeff (Betty), Kellogg, and Wendy (Greg), Wabasha; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, John (Bob) and Charlotte Arens, Kellogg, Richard Arens, Lonsdale, MN, Ellie Arens, Kellogg; sister, Elinor Graner, Kellogg; sister-in-law, Jean Wischow (Rolly), Rochester; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by great-grandson, Austin Arens, brother, Odell "Buzz" Arens and sister, Margaret "Betty" Dittrich.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 11:30am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg with the Reverend Glenn Frerichs officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. The Kellogg and Wabasha American Legion Posts and the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post of Wabasha will perform military rites. Friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Sunday from 4-8pm where there will be a prayer service at 7pm and at the church on Monday one hour before the service. The Abbott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
