Residing in Holyoke, Massachusetts at the time of enlistment. Enlisted on August 6, 1862 as a Corporal, in the 36th Massachusetts Infantry, Company K. Promoted to First Sergeant. Wounded in right arm, amputated, on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia. Died at Washington DC of wounds received.

He married Eloise Maria Chandler on Jul 5,1858 at Springfield,MA. She was born on Nov 7,1838 at Enfield,CT, a daughter of Marcus Marble Chandler and Maria (King) Chandler. Following Charles' death, she remarried, to John Chapman, and was living in Somers,CT as late as 1911.
