CANTON, Ohio — Charles E. "Chuck" Abernethy, former resident of Ponca City, died Friday, April 13, 2007, in Canton, Ohio, due to complications of a stroke that occurred 16 years earlier. He was 83.

Chuck was born in Canton, Ohio, Oct. 12, 1923. After high school, he served in the Army in World War II, stationed in Germany. He was part of a force with liberated Dachau concentration camp in Munich, Germany. He then graduated with a business degree from Ohio State University where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.

During his employment with the Burroughs Corp., an adding machine company, he lived in Indianapolis, Ind., Decatur, Ill., Wichita, Kan., and Ponca City. Settling in Ponca City, Chuck established Abernethy's Men's Wear, located on Third and Grand Avenue, which he owned for 14 years.

During this time, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as trustee and deacon. Also he was a member of Men's Wear Retailers of America, county chairman of the Heart Fund Drive, board member of the American Red Cross, member of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rotary Club.

However, his proudest achievement was his membership in the SPEBSQSA, a barbershop singing society. Chuck founded the Ponca City chapter, emceed many regional shows and served as a stage presence judge at the international conventions. The highlight of his barbershop career was serving as international president.

In 1974, Chuck moved to Canton, Ohio, and established the Cabinet Cote business. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, the Canton chapter of SPEBSQSA, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Start County Better Business Bureau and NARI, a building organization.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Geraldine K. Abernethy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Don Yarbrough of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Kerry and Dr. James R. Stewart of Leesburg, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Cameron and Cynthia Abernethy of Lebanon, Ohio; five grandchildren, Steva and Michael Yarbrough, Ryan and Lauren Stewart and Tiphanie DeWitt; and a brother, Ira A. Abernethy Jr. of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Abernethy, and a sister, Virginia Smith.

The funeral was held April 16 at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton with the Rev. Wendy Bausman officiating. Music was performed by his friend, Dick Jones, soloist, and a barbershop quartet, the Hall of Fame Four. Burial was at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens.
