"EARLY SETTLER DIES LAST NIGHT. Mrs. Permelia Bates at home of niece, Mrs. Charles E. Spencer, 302 W. Hempstead, with whom she had spent the winter. Pioneer residence of Jefferson County. Funeral tomorrow at Antioch Church. Burial in Antioch Cemetery. Born July 26, 1834 in Clark County, Ohio and when a child settled two miles east of Perlee, where she had lived until about sixteen years ago. Since that time she has made her home with different relatives. Her first husband, Joseph Mofford, was killed in the Civil War. She later married William Bates who died in 1922. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. J. Hurd, and one brother, M. H. Westenhaver, both of Fairfield, and the following children: Mrs. Hattie Murray of Perlee, R. H. Bates of Ottumwa; Fay Bates of Moline, Ill., O. F. Bates of Burns, Wyo., Homer Mofford of Wyoming."

The following was received on July 14, 2010 regarding the name of "Homer" used in the above obituary transcription:

"Dear Mr Thompson,

I would like to Thank you for the pictures of my family's headstones. The correction is that Permelia son was named Omar not Homer I have found this misprint in a lot of different places. but I have letters from family that say his name was Omar.
