Sally McGinnis' parents, William and Alta McGinnis, emigrated from Sangamon County, Illinois and what is now Jasper County, Missouri in the summer of 1837. Alta was pregnant with her second child, and a daughter was born in the winter of 1838. They named her Sarah Ann, calling her by the nickname of Sally.

Sally died at the age of seven months in the beginning of autumn 1838, and was the first burial in the cemetery that would come to be known as Fullerton Cemetery. Her stone stood for more than 160 years before vandals destroyed it.
