The 1840 US Census of St. Clair County, Alabama enumerated the household of Alexander M. Godwin (age range 40-50 Y/O) and his wife, Margaret M. (McLaughlin) Godwin, (age range 40-50 Y/O). Among several children living in the household was one boy in the age range of 5 to 10 Y/O. This would have been 8 Y/O Alexander Right Godwin who was born on 15 May 1832.

NOTE: Alexander M. Godwin served in the War of 1812 and his service is recognized by the "The General Society of the War of 1812".

The 1850 US Census of District 40, St. Clair Co., AL enumerated the household of Alexander M. Godwin, a farmer born in South Carolina, and his 53 Y/O wife, Margaret M. (McLaughlin) Godwin, born in Tennessee. Living in the household were their children: 25 Y/O Mary A. Godwin; 18 Y/O Alexander Right Godwin, a farmer; 16 Y/O Margaret Hester Godwin; 14 Y/O Marilla Godwin; 13 Y/O Sarah Ann Godwin; 10 Y/O William Washington Godwin and 8 Y/O Pamelia Jane Godwin.

Alexander Right Godwin married Drucilla Frances Little on 02 Dec 1854 at Jefferson Co., AL.

The 1860 US Census of Cahaba Valley, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of the deaf 60 Y/O widower, Henry Perry Little, a farmer born in S.C. Also living in the household were his children: 22 Y/O James R. Little, a farm laborer; 19 Y/O Serena Little; 18 Y/O Martha M. Little; 16 Y/O Andrew Jackson Little and 14 Y/O Hester Little. Listed as a separate family on the census but with the same dwelling number and the same family number as Henry Perry Little was the family headed by 28 Y/O Alexander Right Godwin, a farmer born in AL, and his 28 Y/O wife, Drucilla Frances (Little) Godwin, the daughter of Henry Perry Little by his second wife, Susannah (Crump) Little. Their children were also living in Henry Little's household. They were: 4 Y/O Henry Alexander Godwin; 3 Y/O Laura "Lonney" Deselamond Godwin and 2 Y/O Martha J. Godwin.

At the age of 30, Alexander Right Godwin's life was interrupted by his enlistment into the Army of the Confederacy for three years on 06 May 1862 (planting time) at Pensacola, FL. He was a private in Company "B" 33rd Alabama Infantry which was organized in April 1862 at Pensacola, Florida. Initially assigned to defend Confederate forts in Pensacola Bay, FL, the 33rd was quickly transferred to duty in the Army of Tennessee, where it saw its first significant action at the Battle of Perryville (08 Oct 1862). It would go on to fight at Stone's River, Chickamauga, the Siege of Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign (including Ringgold Gap and Kennesaw Mountain), and the disastrous Franklin-Nashville Campaign in late 1864.

The Civil War record of Alexander Right Godwin states:
He was absent at the Jan. and Feb. 1863 company muster rolls due to having been sent “to genl hosp from Tupelo, Miss. in July (1862) by order of surgeon”. There no mention of the reason for this hospitalization but it probably was due to sickness from disease.

The March and April 1863 musters of Company "B" state he was still absent and had been “sent to Gen Hos from Tupelo, Miss on the 4 July (1862) by order of surgeon. Now at Dalton, Ga”.

The May, June, July, and August 1863 musters of Company "B" dated 20 July 1863 confirm that he was still absent. “Sent to Genl Hosp. from Tupelo, Miss in 04 July 62 by order of surgeon. Now at home on sick furlough”.

The Sept and Oct 1863 musters of Company "B" remarks are drastically different. He was again absent but the remarks state: “Wounded in battle Chickamauga 20 Sept. (1863) Sent to genl hosp by order of surgeon”. The last date on his Civil War record was Feb 1864 but doesn't elaborate further on his war experiences.
