Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" Covin, daughter of Louis and Mary Ann [née Hutchinson] Covin, was born in Bordeaux, South Carolina. Her parents were ancestors of French Huguenots that emigrated to South Carolina during the persecutions of the Huguenots in France in 1764. Here they built a town located at or near the junction of Long Cane Creek and Little River, about three and one-half miles above the confluence of the latter with the Savannah River, and five miles south-east of the village of Willington.
Mattie's grandfather, Lazare Couvain (Covin) had arrived in America, as a French solider with Marquis de La Fayette, and was wound at the battle of the Cowpens. After the war, he joined other relatives in Bordeaux.
On the 2nd of September 1854, Mattie Covin married Marion McKendree Tarrant, son of John R. M. Tarrant .and the former Elizabeth Mary Wickham Marion. "Mattie" and Marion had three known children:
