1st WIFE OF REV. DRURY LACY II.

Williana Wilkinson was born 1806 in Dinwiddie County, VA, the daughter of William Wilkinson and Elizabeth Smith.

On December 24, 1824, 18-year old Williana became the first wife of 22-year old Rev. Drury Lacy, II, son of the Rev. Drury Lacy Sr. and his wife, Ann "Nancy Anna" Smith. At the time of their marriage, Drury had not yet entered the ministry, but was a school teacher in Ararat, Prince Edward County, VA.

Drury & Williana would become parents to 7 known children, the first 3 of whom were born in Virginia: Betsy Lacy (1826-1826), William Drury Lacy (1830-1833), Elizabeth "Bessie" Rice Lacy (1832-1900), Jamse Horace Lacy (1835-1852), Drury Lacy Jr./III, CSA (1839-1869), Rev. William Sterling Lacy II, CSA (1842-1899), and Singleton Wilson Lacy, CSA (1845-1862).

In 1828, her husband entered Union Theological Seminary, and by 1831 he was licensed by West Hanover Presbytery as an Evangelist who labored efficiently in its mission fields. Rev. Lacy built three churches in Virginia, having raised most of the funds himself. By 1833, the couple had removed to New Bern in Craven County, NC where her husband took over as Pastor of the New Bern Presbyterian church from 1834-1837. The couple next moved to Raleigh, where Rev. Lacy became pastor of the Raleigh Presbyterian Church for the next 18 years (1837-1855).

By the time they reached Raleigh, the 37-year old Williana was probably already starting to feel the affects of the tuberculosis that would eventually take her life. Still, she delivered 3 more children before that time. She had already buried her first and second born children; and her only surviving daughter, Bessie, became the embodiment for her own hopes and dreams. A highly educated women, versed in the Greek and Latin classics, Williana insisted her daughter receive a formal education once stating, I will "never be satisfied with a daughter like some girls I occasionally see -- badly educated, awkward, and unladylike." Bessie was sent to the Edgeworth Female Academy in Greensboro, where she indeed received, and later put to good use, a fine education.

Williana Wilkinson Lacy finally succumbed to tuberculosis on May 14, 1846. She was only 40 years old.

Three years after her death, her widowed husband married (2nd) Mary Ritchie Rice of Virginia, eldest daughter of Rev. Benjamin H. Rice, D. D., who in his early days lived and taught in New Bern. This marriage resulted in 3 more children. Dr. Rev Lacy was widowed again in 1880 when Mary died at age 64. He survived her 4 years, passing in 1884 at age 81.

As for Williana's children. Son, James, died 6 years after her, passing in 1852 at age 17. Her 3 surviving sons, Drury, William and Singleton, all served with the Confederate States Army. Her youngest, Singleton, died in 1862 of typhus while in service with the NC 43rd near Petersburg. Drury Jr. (III) survived the war, but died in 1869, shortly after his marriage, at age 30. William Sterling Lacy became a Presbyterian Minister, married, and had one son. He died in 1899 at age 57. Daughter Bessie married banker, Thomas Webber Dewey, and removed to Charlotte, NC where she was mother to 4 known daughters. She was the last surviving child of Williana, passing in 1900 at age 68.
