Sarah Williams Bryan was born 1859 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC the eldest of 9 known surviving children (4 boys/5 girls) born to John Heritage Bryan Jr. and his wife, Margaret Eliza Henderson Outlaw.
She was the paternal grandchild of the Hon. John Heritage Bryan Sr. & Mary Williams Shepherd of New Bern & Raleigh; and gr-grandchild of James D. Bryan & Rachel Heritage of New Bern, Craven Co, NC. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch William Bryan, the Englishman who immigrated to the Virginia Colonies ca. 1690. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of Dr. William Thomas MacKay Outlaw & Margaret Eliza Henderson of Bertie & Wake Counties, NC.
Sarah's parents immigrated to Brazil in about 1866-67, part of a large exodus of Southern Confederates who relocated to Brazil after the Civil War at the invitation of Emperor Dom Pedro II.
Sarah married Frederick Clinton Lewis, a native North Carolinian while still in Brazil, and there their only child, Ethel Lewis (1885-1906) was born. Her husband had left Brazil for North Carolina soon after the birth of their child, in preparation of the entire family returning soon to the United States. Sadly, he did not live to see the return of his family. He died suddenly on on September 16, 1885, while still in his mid-20's, leaving his grieving wife and child to immigrate alone from Brazil.
Sarah returned to North Carolina with her parents and siblings, who after almost 20 years as ex-patriots, were finally coming home. The young widow lived with her parents in Raleigh until her father died in 1891, then she remained with her widowed mother and sisters.
Sarah's only child, Ethel, died in 1906 at age 21. Sarah survived 8 years before passing in 1914 at age 55.
