Died at Vienna, Ont., where he was a farmer and also had a harness/leatherworking business. Grandson of Loyalist Henry Nellis, 1735-1791, Robert was born in Oppenheim, NY, USA, to Peter H. Nellis, 1763-1814, and Sarah Mackie. Had three brothers: Warner, 1798-1882, who farmed at Pamalia, Jefferson Co., NY; Benjamin, 1801-abt 1880, who farmed in Elgin Co. and Oxford Co., Ontario; and Abraham, 1913-abt 1902, who farmed in Elgin Co., moved to Michigan, and then to Nebraska and Iowa. Robert and his brother Abraham were trained as leather workers in the USA before moving to Grimsby, Ont., Canada, about 1832, They subsequenly farmed in Elgin Co. Their half brother, Benjamin (1801-abt 1880), also moved to Elgin Co., Canada, from Oppenheim, NY. Robert Henry Nellis married Mary Ann Tufford. They had five children: William H, who moved to Michigan; Priscilla, who married Marlatt and moved to Michigan; Adelaide, m. Creach; Estella, m. Glover, lived at Aylmer, Ont.; and Charles Edgar, 1853, who homesteaded at Stoughton, Saskatchewan.
