GENERAL WILLIAM ALEXANDER SMITH, HE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE UCV "UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS" ORGANIZATION AND ROSE THROUGH THE ELECTED RANKS OF THE UCV TO BECOME GENERAL OF THE UCV NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION. THESE ELECTED RANKS IN THE UCV WERE HIGHLY RESPECTED BY ALL.

DURING THE WAR HE WAS PRIVATE IN CO C "ANSON GUARD", 14TH NC INFANTRY REGIMENT, A MEMBER OF THE COMPANY COLOR GUARD UNTIL SEVERELY WOUNDED IN THE LEG 1862 AT MALVERN HILL, VA. THIS WAS HIS FIRST AND LAST BATTLE. HE RETURNED HOME TO ANSONVILLE, ANSON COUNTY, NC. AFTER RETURNING HOME, HE THEN ATTENDED DAVIDSON COLLEGE, DAVIDSON, NC AND GRADUATED IN 1865.

IN 1914, GEN. SMITH PUBLISHED A BOOK "THE ANSON GUARD", CO C FOURTEENTH REGIMENT NORTH CAROLINA VOLUNTEERS 1861 - 1865
