Andrew A. Czerkies, 78, of Boyne Falls, passed away on Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his home.

Funeral Mass was held 11 a.m. today, Monday, Sept. 11, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Boyne Falls. The Rev. Francis Partridge officiated. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery in Boyne Falls.

Andy was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Boyne Falls, the son of Stephen and Mary (Zajac) Czerkies.

On May 3, 1941, he married Virginia Sevenski in Lansing. His brother, Joseph Czerkies, and Virginia's first cousin, Maxine Hammond, were witnesses.

Mr. Czerkies served in the U.S. Army with Company K, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Division during the Rhineland and Central European campaigns of World War II. He was inducted on May 17, 1944, and departed for the European Theater on November 21, 1944. He returned July 11, 1945. While in Europe he was a rifleman. (Service number 36-979-346).

Andy was a carpenter working for several different contractors in commercial and bridge building. He also worked for Lansing Drop Forge.

He and his wife returned to Boyne Falls in 1982, and he continued doing construction jobs. Together with his family, he owned and operated Triple A Tree farms.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and V.F.W.

Survivors include one son, Andrew (Patricia) Czerkies, of Elmira; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Sylvester (Josephine) Czerkies, of Boyne Falls; sisters, Victoria Pawlowski of Boyne Falls, Pauline Maior of Roseville, Ann (Sam) martini of Sterling Heights, Bernice (John) Kolodziej of St. Clair Shores; and many nieces and nephews. he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, on Dec. 29, 1999; daughter, Patricia, in 1995; brother, Joseph Czerkies; sister, Josephine Wozniak; and his parents.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Augustine Catholic Church Building Fund.

Arrangements were handled by Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City.
