Rita Rose Gardynik was born August 21, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Ignatius and Martha (Miotka) Gardynik. Rita lived at 5138 30th Street in Detroit throughout her childhood.
On May 5, 1935, Rita made her First Communion at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located at 5207 Lovett in Detroit.
In 1943, Rita graduated from Chadsey High School in Detroit, and previously attended Osborn High School in Detroit for a short time.
In 1947, Rita was still living at home on 30th Street and was working at Grace Hospital. On September 27, 1947, she married the Joseph Czerkies at Church of the Assumption. Her brother, Richard Gardynik, and Joseph's sister, Ann Czerkies, were witnesses.
Rita worked at Square D Company on Rivard in Detroit until about 1952. She did billing, operated the ditto machine and called in trucks for stock.
She retired from the United State Post Office in July 1988 as a Postal Clerk with 23 years of service; she worked at the Sterling Heights Post Office and previously worked at the Utica Post Office. She was also a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Utica.
Mrs. Czerkies is survived by her two children, Mary Ann (David) Petsch of Roseville and Philip (Marilyn) Czerkies of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandson, Steven Kalemkiewicz, Jr. and her three siblings, Anna Lesinski of Riverview, Richard Gardynik of Clinton Township and Thomas (Marie) Gardynik of Fowlerville.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday July 16, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Lawrence Catholic Church 44633 Utica Road, Utica.
Visitation will be held 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday at Diener Funeral Home 48271 Van Dyke, Utica.
