Joseph G. Czerkies, 73, of Utica and Boyne Falls, died March 18, 1996, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Clemens.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at St. Augustine Church in Boyne Falls. The, Rev. Francis Partridge will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Augustine Cemetery, Boyne Falls.

Mr. Czerkies was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Boyne Falls, the son of Steve and Mary (Zajac) Czerkies. He was raised in Boyne Falls.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Asiatic Theater.

On Sept. 27, 1947, he married the former Rita Gardynik at Church of the Assumption in Detroit, Michigan. His sister, Ann Czerkies, and Rita's brother, Richard Gardynik, were witnesses.

After the war, he returned to Boyne Falls, then moved to Detroit where he worked at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren. Following his retirement in January 1988, he made his home between Boyne Falls and Utica.

Mr. Czerkies was a member of St. Augustine Church in Boyne Falls, and St. Lawrence Church in Utica. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and yard work.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Czerkies, of Utica; one son, Philip and his wife Marilyn, of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Mary Ann Kalemkiewicz and her husband, Steve, of Warren; one grandson, Steven Kalemkiewicz Jr.; two brothers, Andrew Czerkies and Sylvester "Zeke" Czerkies, both of Boyne Falls; five sisters, Victoria Pawlowski of Boyne Falls, Josephine Wozniak of Boyne Falls, Pauline Maior of Roseville, Ann Martini of Las Vegas, and Bernice Kolodziej of St. Clair Shores; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Augustine Church Building Fund. Envelopes for memorials are available at the Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City, where visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. Friday, March 22. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Military Service

Served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a cook with the 1346th Army Air Force Base Unit (AAFBU) in Tezgaon, India (now Bangladesh) between March 25, 1943 and July 10, 1946.
