After an illness of only a few days, due to age, Benjamin Mitchener, aged 83 years, a veteran of the Civil War, died Saturday at the home of his nephew, A. J. Mitchener, No. 826 West Ninth street. Mr. Mitchener had a host of friends. He lost his right arm while sergeant in Company E, Fourth Delaware Regiment, during the Civil War. He was a well known figure on the street. Always attired in a suit of blue, and with a flowing white beard of late years, he attracted attention. He formerly lived in the upper part of Delaware and Chester counties, Pa. He was a bachelor. The funeral will be held at 1 op’clock tomorrow afternoon from No. 826 West Ninth street. Interment will be made in Riverview cemetery.

Benjamin Mitchener was a 37-year-old farmer from Pleasant Hills, PA, when he enlisted in Company E (Capt. Harper) on Aug. 7, 1862. He was promoted to Sgt. on Nov. 12, 1862. He was shot in the right arm on June 23rd, 1864, in front of Petersburg. His arm was amputated and he received a disability discharge on March 18, 1865. He is also listed as wounded at Cold Harbor, June 1864.
