Missing in Action during WWII near Iwo Jima with Staff Sergeant Milton B. Gillespie (who has a marker in Section 38, of the Lexington Cemetery near Captain Garland's) and Radio Operator 1LT John Maxwell Hendrix, Jr.
On the night of 31 July 1945, Captain Garland, SSGT Gillespie and 1LT Hendrix lifted off from Central Field on Iwo Jima into stormy weather and a lightning filled sky for a 4 hour patrol flight around the island.
After making one westward pass across Iwo Jima, the crew were never heard from again. Naval crews later found a piece of the left wing.
All 3 men remain MIA today.
