Milo Custer read memorials in the City Cemetery in 1911 and transcribed them. He complained then, "Many of the oldest gravestones in this cemetery erected during the '30's, 40's, were formed from a soft grade of marble, and present much evidence of natural disintegration. The inscriptions are completely obliterated from a few, and many other are slowly disappearing." For David Bay, the memorial read, "Died June 4, 1843, Aged 31 Yrs. 8 Mos. & 8 D."
