MRS. B. JOHNSON BURIED TUESDAY
Washington Island Woman Dies in Ohio City

WASHINGTON ISLAND
— Funeral services for Mrs. Benjamin Johnson, 58, were conducted here Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Anderson, and the remains were laid to rest in the Island cemetery beside the graves of three of her children who preceded her in death. Pallbearers were lifetime friends of the deceased: Nor Shellswick, Carl Richter, Magnus Gunnlaugsson, Steve Gunnlaugsson, Frank Olson and Waldemar Hansen.

Mrs. Johnson passed away at Chegrin Falls, Ohio, Saturday, Jan. 30, following an illness from heart trouble which dated from April of last year. The body was removed to Cleveland, where funeral services were held Sunday and the remains were then shipped to the Casperson Funeral home at Sister Bay. Members of the family living in Chicago and elsewhere met the body at Sister Bay and came here Tuesday morning. The funeral services at Cleveland were attended by members of the immediate family, and several brothers and sisters of the deceased.

Mrs. Johnson, whose maiden name was Evelyn Gislasson was born on Washington Island Sept. 13, 1878. She was the daughter of the late John and Augusta Gislasson, and except for intermittent periods spent the greater part of her life here.

She was united in marriage, to Ben Johnson at Cleveland, O., Dec. 15, 1900, and a few years later the couple embarked in the summer resort business on Washington Island. They built up an enviable business at the Hotel Washington, which they operated during the summer season with the exception of two or three years when Mr. Johnson followed the vocation of steward on one of the large lake steamers. During recent years Mr. and Mrs. Johnson spent the winter in Chicago, returning here for the summer business.

Surviving the deceased in addition to her husband are five of eight children born to the couple. They are Mrs. J. E. Butterworth (Lillian) of Chegrin Falls, O.; Estelle, Raymond, Thorine and John, all living, in Chicago. In addition to these four brothers and two sisters survive, also one grandchild.

Door County Advocate, 04 February 1937, Volume: 23 Issue: 33 Page: 1

Two of the Island’s favorite children were recently joined in marriage in Chicago, Ben Johnson and Eva Gislason. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson and the bride a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gislason. The happy couple have taken up their residence in Cleveland O., the groom being steward on a steamer running out of that port.
