Major League Baseball Player, Professional Basketball Player, Coach. For six seasons (1943 to 1948), he played at the first base position with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. For six seasons (1946 to 1950, 1951 to 1953), he played at the center and forward positions in the National Basketball League and National Basketball Association with the Anderson Packers, Fort Wayne Pistons and Minneapolis Lakers. Born Howard Henry Schultz, he attended Central High School (St. Paul) and played collegiate basketball at Hamline University (Minnesota). He made his Major League debut with Brooklyn on August 16, 1943 and enjoyed his most successful season in 1944, when he appeared in 138 games as a Dodger recording 134 hits including 11 home runs with 83 runs batted in. In 470 career MLB games, Schultz recorded 383 hits with a .241 lifetime batting average. His professional basketball career highlights include being a member of two NBA championship squads (1951-1952, 1952-1953 Lakers). In 338 career NBL and NBA games, he scored 2,513 points. In addition to playing, Schultz served as coach of the Packers during part of the 1949-1950 season and compiled a 21 win and 14 loss record. Following his playing career, Schultz worked as a high school teacher and coached both basketball and baseball. He died from cancer.
