William, his wife, son William R. Cunningham Jr., and daughter owned 3,500 acres of grain lands in Adams County with nearly all of it under cultivation. Also they owned the best residence properties in the city of Ritzville. On January 4, 1865, William Cunningham married Rebecca W. James, daughter of George James (native of Fredericksburg, VA) and Martha Abbott (born in Newburyport, MA and died in 1858). Siblings of Rebecca include, George A. James, Richard F. James, and Hattie James who married John Bancroft, son of George Bancroft, the noted historian. They had 3 children: Alice Cunningham, who married F. P. French, William R.
