John Samuel Ragsdale was the son of Abishalom Ragsdale and Elizabeth Sneed. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his Sneed grandparents. Sources place his birthplace as Union Co., KY and Franklin Co., IL but in later years he mentioned as Franklin Co., IL as his birthplace. He was married four times: first to Catherine B. Arterberry on 31 Jul 1875 in Perry Co., IL; second to Eva J. (Morris) Sneed on 26 Mar 1890 in Franklin Co., IL; and fourth to Sarah Emaline (Headricks) Balch on 20 Dec 1903. Nothing is known about the third wife but his daughter said he was married to an Indian at one time. He died during a flu epidemic that also claimed the life of his step-daughter-in-law on the same day.
