Former Fire Chief Dies
R. Clovis Wright, 77, of 750 Huffman Street, Waynesburg, who played a major role in the building of the Waynesburg Volunteer Fire Company, died in his home of an apparent heart attack at 6 a.m. Friday, November 24, 1978.
A son of the late Lewis Leasure Wright and Armeda Belle Phillips Wright, he was born September 26, 1901 at Reedy, W. Va. but resided most of his life at Waynesburg, PA.
He graduated in 1925 from the Michigan State Automobile School at Detroit and was employed for many years as a mechanic at Fox Auto Sales in Waynesburg, retiring in 1971 as service manager. At the time of his death he was custodian at the First Methodist Church of Waynesburg,
where he was vice chairman of the board of trustees and a member of the administrative board.
As a young man, Mr Wright was injured and hospitalized with serious burns incurred in firefighting and rescue operations during the Downey House fire on Dec. 23, 1925.
He was named an honorary member of the new Waynesburg Fire Company in 1929, and joined the company as an active fireman in 1930. He served as a lieutenant and captain for 12 years, as vice president for one year and as president for four years before being named fire chief in 1946, a
position he held for 13 consecutive years prior to his retirement in 1960.
He was also an active member of the Greene County Fireman's Association and served as county fire marshal for several years. Mr Wright had also served on Waynesburg Borough Council. He was a member and past president of the Waynesburg Lions Club and was a member of Waynesburg Lodge 469, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, having served
as a district deputy grand master. He was secretery-treasurer of the Odd Fellows and Masonic Building Association, a post he had held for several
years.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Lucille Headley Wright, whom he married December 19, 1928; three daughters, Mrs William "Sheila" Black of Avella RD2,
Mrs Val "Kathy" Perez of Plano, Texas, and Mrs William "Susie' Nassis of Poland, Ohio; four sons, Richard L Wright of Pasadena, Texas, William E. Wright of Johnstown, Gerald C (Phyllis Cumberledge) Wright of Barberton, Ohio, and P. J.(Carol Crawford) Wright of Bethel Park, and 13 grandchildren.
A sister, Hazel (Charles) Smith, and a brother, Ira Lloyd (Glen Howard) Wright, are deceased.--Observer-Reporter Nov. 1978
