First Grave in Palestine Cemetery.

Redoric Smith Sr was married 1st to Polly Hall (m. Greene, Georgia in 1811), they had a son, James H "Jimmie" Smith. He was married 2nd to Mary A Clark (m. 1816). They had the following children:

John R, Andrew Jackson Sr, Redoric Jr, Solomon, Almira, Frances M, and Thomas Smith.

Redoric moved with his family from Barbour County, Alabama to Mississippi, settling in Jasper County near Palestine in 1851. He died during the Civil War and his grave was the first in the Palestine Cemetary in 1864. He has no marker, but he is buried close to his son, Andrew Jackson Smith Sr, who has a Civil War marker at his grave site.

Jimmie and Redoric Jr served as deacons of Palestine Church until their deaths. Andrew Jackson Sr and his other brothers, John R and Solomon were Baptist Ministers and Andrew Jackson Sr served as pastor of Palestine Church for a number of years (even riding horse-back to Shady Grove (near Laurel) to preach).

Palestine Church was first a brush arbor, then a split log church was built. It was about twenty by twenty feet with two doors and the windows with plank shutters. Seats were made from split logs. This log church was later torn down and a new plank church was built in 1888. The plank church has since been torn down and a new brick church was built at the same site.

It was then called Palestine Baptist Church, originating in 1864.
