He was also a member of the Dayspring Emmaus Community. Mr. Sikes served his community as a member of the Brooklet City Council, Bulloch County Board of Education and a trustee of the Brooklet Cemetery Trust. He was a former member of the Sylvania Lions Club and the Brooklet Kiwanis Club. He was always an avid sports fan, particularly the Georgia Bulldogs and the New York Yankees. Mr. Sikes was preceded in death by his father, J.W. Sikes.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Penny Trapnell Sikes of Brooklet; his mother, Viola Kicklighter Sikes of Brooklet; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Sikes of Dahlonega and Julie and Hywel Jones of Aberystwyth, Wales; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Jennifer Sikes of Brooklet; two grandchildren, Maddie and Landon Sikes; and his aunt and uncles, Roland and Virginia Starling of Brooklet and Foy Sikes of Vidalia. Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Brooklet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wes Moye officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jay Williams.
The body will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Max Browning, Duane Bohr, Tom Bigwood, Jerome Jones, Dr. Robert M. Benson Jr., Sonny Ross, Sonny Riggs, Bill Winslette, John Martin and Mickey Starling.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the John Wesley Sunday School Class and the Righteous Brothers Reunion Group.
