Son of Thomas Lane (1814-1864)

James Lane enlisted and was appointed as 2nd Corporal on 8 October 1861 at the age of 24 in Company E, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops. Muster roll dated April 8, 1862, last on file, shows him present. Mustered out in April 1862. Commission on 17 May 1862. Elected and promoted to full 2nd Lieutenant of Company E, 55th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, on 17 May 1862. Promoted to full 1st Lieutenant on 12 September 1862. Captured at Battle of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, on 9 September 1863. He was a Prisoner of War at the POW Prison for Officers at Johnson's Island, Ohio. Released as POW on 12 June 1865 after the Civil War ended.
