Cheney Wilcox, whose name is one of the most familiar ones In our village. He is the son of Newell and Polly Hutchinson Wilcox, and was born at South Onondaga, New York. August 25, 1823 and was one of a family of six children. When Cheney was six years old the family moved near Little Utica. He coming to Baldwinsville when in his sixteenth year. For two years he worked in the Woolen mill for Kellogg & Farr. in what was later the fork factory building- now a part of the Amos property. Later he worked in Syracuse and was for two years employed on the canal. He Subsequently learned the mason trade here with Stephen Fancier, his first work on a brick building being in 1840 when what is now the north side intermediate and primary School building was erected. Mr. Wilcox laid the first and last stone in the foundation wall, the first brick and was expecting to lay the last brick, but the late William Fancher heat him out of that honor. Mr. Wilcox was married by Elder Beach. August 13. 1846, to Miss Roxy Fancher. With the exception of a year spent in Virginia. Mr. Wilcox lived in this town continuously until 1891. when he moved to Green Point, town of Salina. where he now resides. Mr. Wilcox was overseer of the poor for the town of Lysander from 1881 to 1891. and made a splendid record in that capacity, and his going away alone prevented his continuance in office. Away bach in 1842, one P. K. Williams issued a small sheet here for which Mr. Wilcox subscribed. Later he had the Republican as published by West, and has been a continuous subscriber of THE GAZETTE during the fifty years of its life. We called upon Mr. Wilcox a while ago at his pleasant home on the Liverpool plank road, of course we found him busy, as no one ever sees him idle. His health is still good and with his worthy wife seemed to be enjoying life to its fullest. They have two children, Mrs. H. A. Mover and Charles Wilcox, the former residing near her parents, the latter in Syracuse. Among our Citizens there are none who have been more highly regarded than Cheney Wilcox.
