Solomon Yoakam was born abt 1792 in Virginia to Michael and Drusilla Yoakam, members of an old and respected colonial family. His father's family moved to Knox County, Ohio in 1810. In that early day the woods were inhabited by wild animals and Indians. Solomon remained in Virginia and served In the War of 1812, a private in Capt. Wamsley's Company of Virginia Volunteers.

On the 30 May 1816 Solomon married Ruth Carter in Knox County, Ohio. They became the parents of seven children. In December of 1820, his father Michael sold him a third of his 200 acre tract of land in Knox County, Ohio. Solomon later sold this tract to his brother George Yoakam.

In November of 1834 Solomon bought 40 acres of land in Allen County, Ohio as several of the Yoakam brothers moved to Allen County, Ohio with their mother Drusilla.

In June of 1849 Solomon bought another 40 acres of land in Auglaize County, Ohio. In September of 1852 Solomon received Bounty Land for his War of 1812 service at the Defiance Land Office.

Solomon died on the 15 August 1856 and was buried in the Fort Amanda Cemetery, Auglaize County, Ohio which was named for the fort where pioneer families had often taken refuge from the Indians.
