Chemist. Born in Oslo, Norway, he was a professor of chemistry at the Norwegian Institute of Technology when he moved to the United States in 1928. He studied at John Hopkins University and Brown University, became a naturalized American citizen in 1945 and developed his theory of electrolytes. In 1968, he won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, for his firm statistical basis for the theory of liquid crystals.
